The Spoon is Here

DPS Launches the Highly Anticipated Spoon Ski SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—January 28, 2013—DPS, the world’s only prepreg carbon fiber ski manufacturer, is proud to announce the launch of their Spoon ski—built in DPS’ newly opened ski factory in Utah. The Spoon is the most advanced deep powder ski on earth. Designed exclusively for the best, deep powder days. The Spoon features a convex 3-D shovel combined with a single-radius underfoot rocker and radical edge bevel for the ultimate powder surfing sensation. “The Spoon has been DPS’ most elaborate shaping research and design project, both in terms of time and expense,” explains DPS’ President and Founder Stephan Drake. “It has taken five complex 3-D prototypes to dial in the shape, and hone the 13/14 production version. From the start, the design mandate was to create a 100 percent dedicated powder surfing tool.” The Spoon draws upon years of experience gained from refining DPS’ iconic Lotus 138 and Lotus 120 models, resulting in a ski that requires very little up-and-down movement in deep powder; providing incredibly fast slarving, angulated skiing with powerful reeling vertical sprays. “Through the development process, we discovered that the ski should feel very loose in the shovel, semi-loose in the mid body, and have a hard rail in the tail,” explains Drake. The Spoon achieved all of these design goals in the prototyping phase by deepening the convexity in the shovel; eliminating the tail convexity to promote a stronger turn finish, and for the final prototype, eliminating the convex cleats all together in favor of a single radius rocker profile borrowed from eight years of development on the Lotus 138. By exploring the farthest reaches of powder ski surfing technology, Drake along with DPS’ Director of Engineering Peter Turner, have again pioneered what is possible while riding deep snow. The Spoon opens a new chapter in deep powder skiing. About DPS DPS designs the world’s most advanced skis. Inspired by a vision to make perfect skis worthy of those who live and breathe the sport, and located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, DPS introduced the world’s first and only Pure prepreg carbon fiber sandwich ski, the first 120mm powder pintail, transferred the word “rocker” from surfing to skiing—then built the first rockered ski with sidecut—and will now unleash the Spoon. The fusion of space age carbon technology and groundbreaking shaping has resulted in the world’s most advanced quiver of skis. DPS Skis are sold on four continents and are a trusted brand of serious skiers worldwide. For more information visit www.dpsskis.com or call 1.801.413.1737.
