Quick note on the great Austrian racer Hermann Maier's retirement from ski racing. It was always a blast to watch this beast of a man run gates-and it was hard not to root for him, an individual and a throwback racer. His amazing comeback after a nearly amputated leg shows what Maier was made of. One comical moment in 1998 that added to his international allure was after a race won in Aspen he celebrated by stealing a car, then a bicycle and then a forklift, all en route to catching a plane out of town.
